Exercises

Learning Objectives

By the end of this project, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a SWOT analysis to assess your classroom’s inclusivity (project needs assessment).
  • Design SEL activities that target specific needs identified in the SWOT analysis (project deliverables).
  • Plan and schedule SEL activity implementation using mind maps and Gantt charts (project management tools).
  • Leverage resources to support project design and implementation (resource utilization).

Instructions

Case study: Fostering Inclusion in Your Classroom with SEL Activities

Project Goal: Design and implement Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities to create a more inclusive classroom environment.

Exercise 1: Self-Assessment – SWOT Analysis

Materials:

SWOT Analysis Template

Analyze your classroom environment.

  1. Identify your strengths: Consider positive student interactions, existing diversity initiatives, or anything that creates a welcoming atmosphere.
  2. Pinpoint weaknesses: Look for areas needing improvement, such as limited resources for differentiated instruction or unclear expectations for respectful behavior.
  3. Find opportunities: Explore options like professional development on SEL strategies or collaboration with colleagues.
  4. Acknowledge potential roadblocks: Be realistic about challenges like limited planning time or student resistance.
Exercise 2: Brainstorming and Mind mapping

Materials:

Project Mind Mapping Template (provided in resources) or use a blank sheet of paper.

  1. Get Creative! Use mind-mapping techniques to brainstorm ideas for SEL activities.
  2. Target Your Weaknesses: Focus on activities that address the weaknesses you identified in your SWOT analysis.
  3. Visually Organize: Organize your ideas using mind maps. Explore connections between different activities.
  4. Consider All Aspects of SEL: Include activities that address self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and self-management.
